Wine-making 101, a very unusual barrel shape used during fermentation and aging

After the harvest last fall I took the opportunity to visit other Domaines in Burgundy.  On this visit I am in the cellars of Domaine de la Vougeriae in Nuits-St.-George.  The assistant wine-maker, Claudine Combier, shows and explains to me an egg-shaped barrel!  I have seen inox and concrete fermentation vessels in oval shapes, but never an oak barrel:
